Avalon Bay
The first thing we noticed was the absence of cars, trucks, and other big automobiles. They were substituted by golf carts. We found a variety of those little ones on the streets – red, white, blue; gasoline driven, electric powered; noisy, quiet. We thanked Catalina Island for giving us a glimpse into the future. As oil reserves hit bottom, golf carts are likely to become the primary mode of transport, right?
Golf Carts
It was almost 10AM when we ventured out the next day. The streets were deserted. Nobody was in a hurry whatsoever. Most of the pedestrians had the same destination – the starting point of the zip-line tour. That was our first stop too. My wife joined the group of 10 for the 11 AM session. Our three year old son was disappointed that he did not get to wear the same helmet that his mom did. My turn for zip-line came in the afternoon. The first leg, though the easiest of all, was the most difficult one. Once I cleared that, the other four legs were wonderful. Our next adventure was parasailing. Parasailing lacked the adrenaline rush that we got from the zip-line tour. Nevertheless, it was a blissful experience to fly so high as a bird.

We explored the underwater beauty of the island on a submarine. Garibaldi, the state fish of California, stole the show. The orange colored fish just stood out among all other fish. Our kid enjoyed submarine the most.

On the last day of our stay on the island, something dramatic happened. Avalon was no longer a sleepy, laid back town. It had a tsunami of people. The new visitors hurried to stand first in the line for whatever activity they wished to do. Scores of families lined up in groups to capture pictures at Patel points. All shops that were empty the day before had customers waiting outside to get in. Golf cart rentals ran out of carts. Popular rides were sold out for the day.
Mexico bound cruise ship
“What’s wrong today?” my wife and I thought. We found the answer very soon. A Mexico bound cruise ship had stopped over at Catalina Island. All new visitors had brought their cruise atmosphere to the ground. They came in a rush, and left in a rush. The town returned to its peaceful routine by 5 PM. We had a sense of relief, but it was time for us to head back to Long Beach on the turtle paced boat.
